Reminiscences
If you don’t like how things are, change it. You are not a tree.
—Jim Rohn
The new year had finally brought some great news for the JONAS Partners.
Within three months of the fateful early morning meeting, traders at JONAS had booked more profits than in the last year together. Gautam’s strategy was working and the machine was losing its hold on the stock markets. What remained to be seen was how long it would be before the machine adapted itself or was reconfigured by its owners to cope up with this new threat.
In the meanwhile, Shreya had constantly been contemplating after that day’s animated early morning meeting about whether or not she wanted to work at JONAS any longer, where she got no respect. After these many years of working at JONAS, money had not remained a vital motivator for her anymore.
It had been almost three months since the thought of quitting JONAS first made home in Shreya’s conscious. She was thinking of telling this to Mukul whenever she met him next, considering that these extended work hours in the past few months had ensured that even their bare minimum fifteen minute breaks were no longer possible and that they were unable to see each other for days at a stretch now, thus eliminating the second and only other motivation apart from money for Shreya to keep working at JONAS.
As the entire country celebrated the New Year’s Day with zeal and enthusiasm, Mukul had decided to take Shreya out for a date on this one day company holiday to discuss something important with Shreya, as he had mysteriously told her.
He had booked them a room at a private property that went by the name of Golden Turtle Farms. It was a privately-owned, professionally-managed farm house cum recreational weekend getaway about thirty kilometres from Gurgaon on the Manesar border. Mukul had suggested that they leave at night so that they could have some private time together in their room as the clock turned twelve. Shreya, however, had insisted for a morning drive instead, just to avoid being stranded on the roads when the calendar turned, given the terrible traffic in Gurgaon due to the New Year festivities.
Mukul picked up Shreya from her South Ex house at around ten in the morning. The traffic was light and the GPS on Mukul’s phone showed an ETA of one hour and fifty-two minutes later.
